Translating Theatre: ‘Foreignisation’ on Stage
Translating Theatre: ‘Foreignisation’ on Stage
The European Theatre Research Network at the University of Kent and Firehouse Creative Productions present Translating Theatre: ‘Foreignisation’ on Stage.
Three staged readings of contemporary plays from continental Europe are presented in three brand new translations from Spanish, French and Polish. One translation strategy, ‘foreignisation,’ tries to retain the source text’s cultural, linguistic and aesthetic difference.
Translating Theatre: ‘Foreignisation’ on Stage is part of a research project that asks: What happens to plays in translation when their unfamiliarity is not domesticated? How is performance affected? How do audiences receive them?
Join us at the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, for a chance to discover three little-known gems of new European writing.
